Probably the single most common complaint everyone hears everyday is about how too much time got wasted on the internet. It’s an easy trap to fall into – the web cab be likened to black hole in its ability to suck you in- and keep you there! In fact, this is such an issue that many people even switch off their Wi-Fi router to work. But what happens if you need to work online? Willpower clearly isn’t good enough. The answer is – you need technology to help you out. And luckily the technology exists – in the form of really useful application for your browser that’s been designed for that specific purpose – to help you avoid wasting time while surfing the internet.
- StayFocusd is one of my favorite applications to help avoid wasting time on the internet. To get it, just visit the website mentioned and add it to your browser. It shows up as a small blue icon next to the address bar. To activate it, all you need to do is click.
- StayFocusd works by limiting your access to specific website that you designate. In short, all you need to do is visit a website where you waste time and once you have, click on the StayFocusd icon. It will automatically give you the option of not letting you visit the site for a period of time. You can also choose whether you want to blocks specific pages within a site or the entire site.
- StayFocusd also comes with a host of settings that you can tweak to get the level of protection from distraction you want. It allows you choose the duration the block on pages/sites runs for, for how many minutes a day you will be blocked. There’s even an interesting challenges section, where you need to complete a tough, but certainly executable challenge before you can change you settings back.
- Another great option StayFocusd provides you with is the interestingly named ‘nuclear option’. This is what you need to use in extreme cases where you just can’t afford distraction or genuinely doubt your ability to withstand the temptation of unblocking sites and pages. The Nuclear option basically helps you block a site for a certain number of hours, irrespective of your Active time or not. But be warned – the reason it’s called the Nuclear option is that once you’ve set it – you can’t change it, no matter what! In short – it’s really your last line of defense against the distractions of the internet – just like a real nuclear option!
