How to Automate Your Phone

The phrase ‘the internet is a vast place’ is so well known by now, it’s surprising anyone actually still bothers to use it. Of course, the reason that they do use it is that it is also very true. This is especially the case with regard to one’s level of engagement on the web. Gone are the days when people had one email account and perhaps one Facebook account. Everyone has a dozen and more things they are interested in and subscribe to multiple feeds and interests. It’s an exciting, informed way to live, but it also takes up a lot of your time and energy, not least in checking one thing, then another, setting something else up, and simply navigating between pages. If you think about it, most of it is simply you responding to something, in one form or another. Whether it’s checking a photo or status you’re tagged in, or waking up early to make the most of weather, it’s surprising how often what we do is because of something else. Which as it turns out, is an excellent thing because here’s an app that takes advantages of exactly that fact, to basically automate your phone – and in fact, large parts of your life. If you like the idea of your technology literally automatically carrying out your wishes, then IF by IFTTT is the app for you. Once you get it, you’ll need to use an email address to sign up.

This is an app where the name explains everything. IFTTT stands for ‘If this, then that’. It’s a brilliant app that basically works by helping you crate ‘recipes’. In short, you can create a number of settings based on the principle that if something happens, then you want something else to happen. For Instance, you can create a recipe that instructs that if you’re tagged in a photo, you immediately receive a text. Or perhaps one that automatically cross posts from Facebook to Twitter for you. The possibilities are limitless.

iftttBasically, to create a recipe, you’ll just need to do 3 simple things. The first is to pick an If action, such as the next day being sunny or being tagged in a photo on Facebook. The next thing you’ll need to do is activate the channel for instance if you’re dealing with weather you need to activate the weather channel, and so on. Don’t worry about this though, If suggests which channel you need to activate. The last thing you need to do is decide what happens when the If action takes place. So for instance, you might want to get an email if the next day is rainy. It’s as simple as that! You can even check on your recipes by clicking on the mortar- and-pestle icon. This takes you to your my Recipes directory, where you can look at all your recipes.

Now let’s look at some easy and useful recipes to automate your phone that you can crate using if. For instance, maybe you like keeping track of all the Facebook photos you’re in. Perhaps you’re a music lover. Well, in that case you can easily throw together a recipe that automatically turns on your radio the moment you check in at home. Talk about always being one with the sound!

Or perhaps you’re the kind of person who likes taking road trips. You can easily have a recipe that logs your trip expenses so you can keep track of your automotive expenses – to help you make sure you maximize your enjoyment within your budget!

In case you’re the sort of person who loves collecting information and knowledge, there’s a simple recipe that’ll add a random Wikipedia article to your feedly every day. In your case at least, the learning will never stop – just the way you like it!

Maybe you’re on holiday. In that case, you can get the app to help you make the most of it by ensuring you get a wake-up call if the weather is fine. No point wasting time on a vacation!
